FMCG Field Sales & Territory Manager Jobs: Career Guide 2026
What Is an FMCG Field Sales / Territory Manager?
Field Sales Representatives and Territory Managers are the boots on the ground of FMCG distribution — building relationships with independent retailers, convenience stores, food service operators, and on-trade accounts within a defined geographic territory. They're responsible for distribution, display standards, promotional execution, and volume targets within their patch.
Core Responsibilities
- Managing a territory of 100–300+ customer outlets (convenience, independent, on-trade)
- Winning new distribution for NPD and managing ranging at outlet level
- Executing promotional activity and checking compliance
- Negotiating secondary placement (off-shelf displays, gondola ends)
- Building relationships with depot managers, buyers, and store managers
- Reporting via CRM (Salesforce, Repsly, or similar) and managing territory plans
Field Sales Salaries in FMCG
- Field Sales Representative: £27,000–£38,000 + bonus + company car (UK) / $45,000–$65,000 + car (US)
- Territory Manager: £32,000–£45,000 + bonus + car / $55,000–$78,000
- Area Sales Manager (team lead): £42,000–£58,000 / $70,000–$95,000
Company car or car allowance is virtually universal in field sales roles — a significant part of the total package.
Why Field Sales Is a Great Career Starting Point
The best FMCG commercial leaders — including most successful National Account Managers and Sales Directors — started in field sales. The customer exposure, commercial negotiation experience, and product knowledge gained in territory roles are genuinely irreplaceable. Many FMCG graduate schemes include a field sales rotation specifically for this reason.
Where Field Sales Leads
Territory Manager → Area Sales Manager → Regional Sales Manager → National Account Manager (the most common step up) → Sales Manager → Head of Sales. Field sales experience is also valued highly in Category Management, Trade Marketing, and Shopper Marketing roles.
